Uncharted Territory

After learning how to sail on one of the Finger Lakes in western New York, I began to realize that maritime phrases are embedded in our everyday language. This body of work utilizes those phrases as a starting point in creating a non-linear visual metaphor for the journey through life.

With its long history of travel, maritime culture is chock-a-block with content for describing journeys. The objects and processes relating to sailing are extremely interesting when considered from a sculptural or craft perspective. Additionally, sailors, deckhands, and captains alike took a great deal of pride in their particular crafts.

Many of the materials and processes within this work are true to craft of seamanship. When glass it utilized, it is used for either it’s aesthetics or to reinforce the conceptual content of the work at a material level.
